Make it - Neo Generalism, Opensource and Innovation
Engage seminar series
Open lecture by Jo Hinchliffe
Join us for an energising dive into opensource development and innovation, where an open culture helps to spark breakthrough projects.
This talk is part of Engage 鈥 lectures in computing, engineering and design
Opensource and open culture are often the wells from which innovation is sourced. Yet proprietary methodologies keep guard and sometimes gate technical development. Combine this with the propagation of outdated IP management systems and licensing and it鈥檚 the antithesis of innovation. In this energetic talk Jo will pick out emergent themes from his varied work showing and telling of interesting technical projects with a focus on how the opensource development methodologies, culture, and open licensing help to create unique work that can鈥檛 always be replicated using proprietary means. He鈥檒l also probably bring a large rocket to point with.
Neo generalist Jo Hinchliffe is a freelance maker, community developer, author and technical writer. With a focus on open source hardware and software Jo has a list of clients that include Raspberry Pi, FreeCAD, Tindie, and many more. Jo has been a core contributor to the Libre Space Foundation, a decentralised organisation that has created and delivered opensource satellites to low earth orbit via both the ISS and SpaceX Falcon missions. As a maker Jo has created a bewildering array of projects, from large opensource high power rockets, through watchmaking, boatbuilding, opensource robotics platforms, the list is near endless. Jo is the author of 鈥淔reeCAD for Makers鈥 and 鈥淒esign an RP2040 Board in KiCad鈥.
